SCHOOLS RUGBY UNION. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report for the season 1931 of the Wairarapa Primary Schools Rugby Union states: — The past season has been a very difficult one for all sport but we can present our report and balance sheet with the knowledge that we passed, with success, through trying times. The senior championship was tnis year annexed by Carterton who played excellent football to overcome strong opposition in the south and then defeat Central in the final by 11 points to 5. We congratulate the Carterton team and their coach, Mr J. S. Donald, on a well-merited victory. The junior grade was Avon by GreytoAvn in the South and by St. Patrick’s in the North. We are very pleased to see the teams from smaller schools competing so avcll in this grade and producing such good football. Early in August our representative team rvas entertained by the Hutt Valley Schools’ Union and although our boys Avere beaten by 9 to <1 they played creditably and enjoyed to the full the excellent entertainment provided by their hosts.. The annual tournament Avas held this year in Wairarapa and proved quite successful even though expenses Avere not certain. This Avas overcome, however, by a £4O grant from the N.Z.U., Avithout Avliich Ave could not have carried on and to them the thanks of all are due. Interesting games Avere a feature, only narrow margins separating the teams. The Wairarapa boys gained the banner Avith Avins over Wanganui and' Manawatu and a draw Avith Wellington, AA’liile Wanganui Avere runners-up. Our congratulations to the boys on the determination and sporting games they played and to the losers on their gentlemanly Avay they took tlieir defeats. The entertainments provided by Thos. Berth wick and Sons (Aust.) Ltd. and the Rotary Club were gratefully appreciated by the visiting boys and their managers. We also Avish to thank again those very generous folk of Masterton and Carterton avlio billeted the visitors and made their stay with us so enjoyable. W ithout this most generous aid the tournament could not be conducted and all the visitors spoke highly of the Avay in Avliich they had been treated by their hosts and hostesses. The balance sheet shews a gain on the season’s Avork of £l/4/9, so that our credit iioav stands at £2/17/2. Tins is due only to the fact that Messrs. I. Jordan and W. 11. Booth both showed tlieir practical interest in our work by donations of £l/1/- each and to them Ave extend our sincerest thanks. This generosity Avill be most useful to us during the'difficult season ahead. We Avish to thank the W.R.U. for continued assistance but trust that when times improve they may help the bovs more financially; the “Daily
Times,” “Age” and “Dominion” for their aid and interest; the A. and I’., Carterton, for the use of rooms for meetings, and those who have cheeifully given their time to refereeing for the boys and lastly all who have helped to make a successful season. The coming season will be very difficult for all but we hope that the winning spirit of the playing fields will help us through. ) For the Wairarapa Primary Schools Rugby Union —W.
