OBITUARY

MOTHER MARY GERTRUDE. Tho news of the death of Eev. Mother Mary Gertrude Banahan will be received with feelings of deep regret by a wide circle of friends in Masterton and throughout the district. The late Mother Gertrude had been in illhealth for some time past, and her death, which occurred at St. Bride’s Convent, Pahiatua, yesterday, was not unexpected. Born in Boscommon, lieland, 76 years ago, the late Mother Gertrude early in life showed a very fervent attachment for the religious life which she embraced as a young woman. After completing her religious training she came to Australia in 1883 to establish tho Order of Brigidine Nuns in Comba, New South Wales. Mio remained there until 189 S, when. - came to New Zealand and founded same order in Masterton. She lemained here for many years, during which time she made a great many friends. The late Mother Gertrude was a woman of great scholastic ability, which she ably displayed during her years of teaching in this district. This, with her remarkably sympathetic, natuie, won for her the many friends she had. Under her supervision and guidance the Order has now established four convents in New Zealand. Some time after the establishment of the convent in Pahiatua, the late Mother Gertrude took charge there, and has been a resident there for some years. sympathy will be extended the Mother Superior and Sisters in their sad loss. The funeral will take place in Masterton on Saturday, leaving St. Patrick’s Church at 10.30. Eequiem Mass will he celebrated at 10 a.m. MRS W. J. GIBSON. The many friends of Mrs W. J. Gibson, of Church Street, Masterton, will regret to hear of her death, which occurred yesterday afternoon. The late Mrs Gibson, who had been ailing for some time, was born in Warrandyte, Victoria, and came to New Zealand in 1900, settling in Masterton. Mrs Gibson was an earnest church worker, taking a prominent part in the affairs of Knox Presbyterian Church. She had been a teacher in the Sunday School, a member of the choir, the Ladies’ Guild and P.W.M.U. She was for 20 years treasurer of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A., and was a past president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A., and was a past president of the ladies” committee of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society. The late Mrs Gibson is survived by her husband two sons, Mr lan Gibson (Wellington) and Mr Neil Gibson (Auckland). Two sisters and onelirother reside in Victoria. Her only sister in New Zealand was the late Mrs James Allan, of Lansdowne, who predeceased her a few months ago. The sympathy of a large number of friends will be extended to the bereaved relatives m their great loss. The funeral will take place to-mor-row, leaving the residence, 72 Church Street, at 2.30 p.m., for the Masterton Cemetery.
