SUPREME COURT.

The action of the Government in closing down the Supreme Court sessions in Masterton on the score of expense is not justified. As far as the Wairarapa is concerned, as Mr 11. TI. Daniell rightly pointed out at the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday, the expense associated with Supreme Court sessions would be greatly increased, as it would be necessary to hear cases in 'Wellington and to take witnesses there from the Wairarapa. How the Government expects to make a worth-while saving by closing the Supreme Court in Masterton, and hearing cases in Wellington, is one of the mysteries which a Government department alone is capable of producing. Mr Daniell’s strongprotest was justified, and the Chamber is to be congratulated on the stand it has taken. We fail to see how the Government can possibly make a saving that will offset the inconvenience and expense which will result to Wairarapa clients through the suspension of the local sittings. The people of the district, who, unfortunately, have recourse to the Supreme Court, will be put to heavy and unjustifiable expense by the removal of the sittings to Wellington. We trust that the Chamber of Commerce, the legal profession, and the public generally will continue to protest against the injustice done until satisfaction is received.
