UNEMPLOYED TELEGRAM
LIBEL ON TOWN. MAYOR’S STRONG EXCEPTION. This week the following telegram was forwarded by the Masterton Relief Workers’ Committee to the Prime Minister, the Minister in Charge of Unemployment, the Leader of the Opposition, and Mr G. R. Sykes: “Masterton unemployed relief workers genuinely concerned at continued shortage of allocations. Much distress locally, families practically starving. Immediate increase in allocations imperative. ’ ’ At the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last night Mr T. Jordan (Mayor) took strong exception to the statement that families were starving in Masterton. “If there are families starving I would like to know who they are,” he said. “The statement is a libel on the lot of us. The Committee had no right to use such words at the expense of the community, as the statement must certainly damage the good name of the town. The statement is a libel on the town and on the residents.” C'r. White stated that he had also protested against the statement regarding the “starving families.”
