UTMOST SECRECY

Treasury officials are preserving tlie utmost secrecy with regard to the withdrawal of the £1,150,000, which is more than sufficient to meet the month’s salaries and wages. It is presumed that tho money represents income tax, railway and tramway revenue, and lottery receipts. Tho Government has not disclosed its plans for carrying on without the usual banking facilities, and persons handling its cheques arc likely to experience inconvenience. A REQUEST FOR DELAY. SYDNEY, Monday. Mr Lang sent a telegram to the Prime Minister (Mr Lyons) to-night, asking him to defer the proclamation making operative the Financial Agreement Enforcement Bill until he had an opportunity of testing its constitutionality. This Bill empowers the Commonwealth to recover money from a defaulting State. A LAST APPEAL. (Received Tuesday, 10.15 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. A last appeal to Mr J. T. Lang to remit the interest in which he defaulted, standing at £830,000, is made in a letter posted to him by Mr J. A. Lyons. Though Parliament meets to-day, the proposed resolutions under Section 6 of the Financial Agreement Enforcement .Act, declaring the urgency of payment, will not be introduced until Wednesday, presumably to allow time for Mr Lang to take advantage of the final opportunity for voluntary settlement. Mr Lyons lias received Mr Lang’s telegram, beseeching the Commonwealth Government to withhold any action until the High Court has decided the legality of tho Act. Mr Lyons refused to make any comment.
