ST. JOHN AMBULANCE.
An institution which is a decided asset in a community is the St. John Ambulance Association. In a quiet manner they go about their work, “unheralded, unsung.” The general public seem to forget their existence until an accident occurs, and immediately the cry then goes forth, “AVhere’s the ambulance?” The ambulance is expected to be at the beck and call of everyone, and all without any contribution from the public towards its upkeep. The local branch of the Association is an example of service rendered free in the interests of the community. The Ambulance Brigade is selfsupporting, and the members are put to heavy expense in connection with the provision of uniforms, bandages, splints, etc. Serving the public as they do, the members should not be expected to keep in existence out of their own pocket an institution which is for the free use of the public. The members of the local branch are to be commended for their devotion to their duty. At sports gatherings, football matches, etc., they are to be found ready to alleviate suffering as much as lays within their power should unfortunate circumstances necessitate a call on their services. In street accidents their good work has been demonstrated repeatedly. The local branch of the St. John Ambulance Brigade is such an important part of the community that it merits the loyal support of the citizens of Masterton, and the members should not be asked to bear the whole cost of keeping the institution in existence.
