The deatli took place at Nelson yesterday of Dr. W. J. Maekay, at the age of S 3.

Mr G. M. Spence, of New Plymouth, President of the New Zealand Aero Club, is at present on a visit to Masterton. He is the guest of Mr W. L. Free, President of the Wairarapa Aero Club.

At the meeting of the Masterton Central School Committee last night a vote of condolence was passed with Mr W. E. Nieol (a member of the committee) and family in the recent death of his father, Mr J. Nieol. At the Kuripuni Methodist choir practice last night the Rev. W. Parker informed the. choir that the trustees were unanimous in appointing Mr T. R. Maunsell choirmaster. The minister complimented the choir members.

At the annual meeting of the Masterton United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary last night reference was made to the splendid work of the manager of the dispensary, Mr L. J. Taylor, and his staff, and to the assistance rendered by Mrs Taylor. A London cable states that Mr Lloyd George has now fully recovered from his serious illness, and is expected to return shortly to Parliamentary work. A luncheon of Liberal members of Parliament, which he attended on V ednesdav, is regarded as a prelude to his return to politics.

At the annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the St. John Ambulance Association the following committee was elected for the ensuing year: —Mrs Crosbie (chair), Miss Earl (secretary and treasurer), Misses Tyler, Hector, Hack, G. Peters, Dr. Campbell and Mr A. Griggs.

At the annual meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A. yesteidav afternoon the election of officeis iesultcd in Mrs M. G. Maekay being elected president, Mesdames Welch, White and Young, vice-presidents; Mrs A. Kilgour, secretary; and Mrs V illiams, treasurer. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring officers.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year at the annual meeting of the Wairarapa High School Girls’ Association last night: Patron, Mr II B. Tomlinson; president, Miss Norma G. Welch; vice-presidents, Miss O. R. Sutherland and Mesdames G. Vv. Mo rice and 11. B. -Tomlinson; secretary and treasurer, Miss Maisie Thomas; comm ittec, Misses Xola McCalmont, Zelna Ackerman, Peggy Gee, Molly Morton, Olive Johnston, Joan Renner, Nancy Pike and Betty Hosting. A very happy gathering was held in St. Patrick’s Assembly Hall last night, when an opportunity was taken to farewell Miss Eileen Hunter, who is entering the Home of Compassion, and Mr R Hanley, who has been transferred to Pahiatua. Father Moore, who presided, made complimentary references to the splendid services rendered by Mr Hanley in various ways in connection with church work. He expressed pleasure at the step Miss Hunter had decided to take in such a worthy cause, and all wished her blessing in her new calling. Miss Hunter was the recipient of a black woollen shawl from the ladies of tho Catholic Club, and St. Patrick’s Tennis Club. Mr J. Hunter responded on behalf of Miss Hunter. Mr Hanley, who was secretary of the St Patrick’s Choir and of the St. I inceiit do Paul Society, was presented with a propelling pencil and fountain pen respectively, while from the Catholic Club and Tennis Club, of which he was a member of the committee, he received a pair of military hair brushes. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” concluded the proceedings.
