WASTING MONEY.
The Address-in-Reply being out of the way, Parliament is now in a position to proceed with the legislation which may be placed before it. The fate of the no-confid-ence motion was a foregone conclusion, and the time spent upon it only added to the bill which the taxpayer has to pay for such an unwieldy number of members and for the infliction of the speeches such as they were, it is unfortunate for the Dominion that the Government lacks a policy to meet the present circumstances. It appears to be only capable of appealing to commissions, and adding to the taxation burden without any attempt at statesmanship. New Zealand to-day is sadly in need of strong men to lead it in Parliament, and of a policy of deeds, not words. What has the debate on the Address-in-Reply brought forth? Nothing but expense. The Labour Party could have scored, “a win in their defeat” by registering a brief protest in connection with the. more vital matters coming within the scope of the Address, instead of wasting words for days to no good purpose. Speeches in Parliament interest the taxpayer very little at any time, and less just now. All he is patiently waiting for is to see how much further he is to be bled in connection with taxation. Parliament would be much better employed in trying to find a way to assist the business people of the Dominion to make ends meet than in indulging in the extravagance of talking platitudes and pilingup the cost to the long-suffering-taxpayer.
