When Compris won the Metropolitan Handicap on the last day of the C.J.C. November meeting, there was little between five horses. Compris has gone to Australia, but the other four of that quintet are engaged in the Great Autumn Handicap to be run over the same distance. It will he observed in the appended table of weights that Spearful, who has not done much racing since, has a good deal the best of the comparison:—Metropolitan: Gay Crest (2), 9.3; Jaloux (3), 7.7; Spearful (4), '8.3; Black Duke (5), 8.0. Autumn: Gay Crest 9.13, Jaloux 8.3, Spearful 8.3, Black Duke 8.9.

The two-year-olds which raced at Napier Park last week were a somewhat mixed.lot. Chief Marionette and Courtyard are a pair that may be expected to improve, but the first-named will probably always be more at home over a short course, while Courtyard seems likely to stay. Aese.ulus, who ran second to Chief Marionette on the first day, is a fine-looking chestnut colt by Night Raid (imp.)—Tinihanga, and gives the impression that he will develop into a good three-year-old, and Mr Lowry appears to have a likely pair to represent him in the tliree-vear old classics in this younger and Courtyard. Princess Bell js a nice sort of filly, and so is Freze, but one of the best-looking of the lot;is Blue Boy, a brown colt by Gainscourt - Foionaise, a. mare by Rosscndale. He is inclined to be unruly at the post, but when he is in racing trim should be a good sort.

The Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton last year was won by Charmeusc (7.1) from Great Star '(7.10), while Silver Taper (8.13), Autopay (7.13), Arrow Lad (8.1), Chrysology (7.11) and Jaloux (7.1) were some of the other starters. These seven are again engaged this time. Another comparison is afforded by the Stewards’ Handicap run over six furlongs in November. Eight of the Stewards’ field are in the Great Easter, and the weights in the two events compare as follows: — Cimabue (1), Stewards, 5.9, Easter 9.0; Golden Wings (2), 5.6, 8.5; Red Heckle (4), 8.0, 7.12; Autopay 9.6, 5.12; Charmeusc 7.12, 7.12; Cricket Bat (5), 7.11. 8.5; Great Star, 7.9, 7.13; Arrow Lad, 7.8, 8.1.
