COST OF LIVING
FALL IN AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, Tuesday. The annual Labour Report by the Commonwealth Statistician shows a big fall in the cost of living in Australia since 1929. The report shows that the retail price of groceries on the average was 1-1 per cent, cheaper in 1930 than in 1929. Dairy produce was 9 per cent, lower, and meat (i per cent, down. The fall continued into 19.51, and had increased to over 20 per cent, for food in June. The average nominal weekly wage in Australia was £o Is yd for adult males and £2 14s for adult females at September, 1929. Since then wages have declined steadily. At the end of 1930 the corresponding rates were £4 16s 9d aud £2 13s 7d per week.
