UNEMPLOYMENT.
It is to be hoped that early in the present year the Government will set about grappling with the unemployment problem in a manner that will show that it is worthy of the position which it holds. Lp io now the Government appears to be at a loss how to deal with this great question. The taxpayer is being bled to provide money for unemployment, and has a right to demand that the money so raised be spent judiciously and for the purpose for which it was raised. It is unfortunate that the Dominion has not at its command in the present crisis a Minister of Finance who is able to provide a policy that will meet the situation. The unemployment problem appears to be altogether too big for the Government to successfully handle, and the taxpayer is tired of the “muddling along” that is in evidence. A lar<|e proportion of the money that is being raised for unemployment relief is being wasted* and is not returning the Dominion any benefit, The unemployment problem requires overhauling in a business-like mannei, so that the taxpayer may see some return to the Dominion _ as _ a whole for the money that is being extracted from him.
