SYDNEY BRIDGE

FIRST TRAIN CROSSES. ■ SYDNEY, Tuesday. For the first time to-day, a train crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge 180 feet above the water. The event was heralded by a salvo of ferry sirens cock-a-doodle-dooing, which attracted the attention of thousands of people on both sides of the harbour. A locomotive drawing two carriages with an official party aboard, steamed slowly over the great structure, looking not much larger than a child’s toy, amid a maze of towering steel. The occasion was a noteworthy one in the history of the Harbour Bridge and in the careers of the train crew.

The original estimate of the cost of Sydney Harbour Bridge, inclusive of land resumptions, was £5,756,000. According to the report of the Australian Auditor-General, submitted to the Government, the total expenditure to June 30 last ivas £8,136,946.
