A Melbourne cable announces the death of Captain Jacka, the first Australian to win the Victoria Cross in the Great War.

Many friends will learn with great regret of the death of Mr. A. C. Scandrett, which occurred yesterday afternoon, after an illness of brief duration. The late Mr. Scandrett was the fourth son of the late Mr. W. B. Scandrett, of Invercargill. He had been for the past thirteen years in the employ of the Masterton Borougn Council as inspector at the Municipal Abattoirs. Mr. Scandrett is survived by four brothers and two sisters. The brothers are Messrs. Alfred Scandiett, of Perth, 'West Australia; Douglas Scandrett, of Invercargill; Victor Scandrett, of Masterton. The sisters are Mrs. Crawford, of Auckland, and Miss Scandrett, of Wellington. The funeral will leave the residence of Mr, Gordon Scandrett, 55 Bentley Street, to-morrow at 2 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
