WAIRARAPA TOURNEY. ENTRIES EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD. Exceptionally good entries have been received for the Wairarapa Lawn Tenuis Association’s annual championship and handicap tournament, which opens on Wednesday. The total entries received are only fourteen short of last year’s total. This must be considered highly gratifying and a further proof of the popularity of the fixture, as, in view of the adverse economic conditions, a substantial decrease in entries would not have been unexpected. Although entries closed on Saturday, the secretary (Mr. H. M. Boddington) ’phones 1568, 1032, will receive late entries up to 8 o’clock to-night. Following are the detail entries in the various sections, the figures for 1931 being shown in parentheses: —

Championships.—Men’s singles, 52 (50); men’s doubles, 30 (27); ladies’ singles, 40 (4S); ladies’ doubles, 23 (28); combined doubles, 42 (43); boys’ singles, 18 (31); girls’ singles, 24 (31). Handicaps.—Men’s singles, A grade, 6.3 (60); men’s singles, B grade, 26 (31); men’s doubles, A grade, 36 (29); men’s doubles, B grade, 15 (16); ladies’ singles, A grade, 56 (60); ladies’ singles, B grade, 37 (24); ladies’ doubles, A grade, 30 (33); ladies’ doubles, B grade, 22 (21); combined doubles, A, grade, 47 (46); combined doubles, B grade, 23 (20). Totals, 584 (595). Up to the present there are 209 individual entries.

The entries include a good sprinkling of players of standing and some attractive tennis outsiders who will be competing are: Messrs. R. A. Court, North Island champion; J. N. Lowry, Hawke’s Bay; H. Dymond, B. A. Barrer, B. Saville, E. H. Adkin, Christchurch; F. C; Spragge, C. M. Watt, G. C. Lezard, B. M. Gibson, K. W. Dyer, S'. C. Wheeler, Wellington; N. B. Bark-

Morrison, New Plymouth; Mcßetli, Christchurch; M. Rutherford, Manawatu; Whisker, Zolirab, Mrs. Campbell, Wellington; Miss McLean, Napier.

WILDING SHIELD. CANTERBURY ON TOP. 1 , CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Conditions at Wilding Park were excellent for the resumption of the Wilding Shield tennis match between Canterbury and the combined districts of Otago, North Otago, and South. Canterbury. Canterbury emerged from the contests yesterday without loss, and carried on the same winning vein today, so will not have to play ton for the right to meet Auckland in the shield challenge round. The southern players are net used to grass-court play. Although they showed improved form on yesterday, the Canterbury playere, however, were definitely on top and did not lose a match in the two days.—(P.A.)
