Mankind’s Goc-d Luck.
A professor of the University of Birmingham has recently announced a discovery that should make mankind thankful for the good luck that saved it from a terrible fate. He says that it was probably only an evolutionary accident that human beings have red, and not green, blood. Certain low forms of life, believed to be related to the worm-like creature from which man evolved, have a green blood-like fluid which carries oxygen round the worm’s body just as the red haemoglobin of blood carries oxygen through the human body. The professor says his discoveries suggest that millions of years ago. of two related types of worm-like life, one had the beginnings of red blood and the otliey. had a green fluid,
both serving the purpose of oxygen carriers. The red-blooded worms develop ed the beginnings of a backbone evolved eventually into the higher animals and man. The green-blooded worms stayed where they were.
