TURF NOTES.

A. E. Ellis has been engaged to vide Admiral Drake in the Wellington Cup.

Esteem * will he ridden in the Wellington Cup by W. J. Broughton.

Gold Sand, who was formerly trained, at Trentham, is due to return there' within the next day or two, and will go into the stable of J. McLaughlin for the Wellington meeting. Gold Sand recently raced successfully at Greymouth and Reefton. He will be ridden in lus Wellington races by W. J. Broughton.

As a three-year-old Rapine won the Wellington Cup in 1923, but since then no horse of a similar age has been successful. Peter Jackson, Esteem and Nea Lap represent the three-year-old division in this year’s contest, and as they have recently been racing prominently in middle-distance events the prospect of establishing another victory appears hopeful.

Auckland horses engaged at the Wellington meeting, to be held on January 20 22 and 23, are: Tea Trader, Princess Bede, High Comedy, Herenna, Tea Chat and Ganpat. Most of these hoises have been displaying winning form during the past few months and should acquit themselves creditably at Irentham.

Pliar Lap drew the highest weight, 9.3. asigned to 43 horses entered for the Agua. Caliente Handicap on March 20, states a message from Sail Diego. Next in order in weights are: —Plucky Play, Hoc-tor Freeland, 8.8; Wotan, 8.7; ißeville Boy, 5.6; Spanish Play, 8.5; Marine, 5.2. Among twelve entries withdrawn were Confli, Sure Fire, Pansy Walker, Sidney Grant, Polydorus and Hillsborough. A total of 28 horses is now gathered in Mexico or California for training.

Don Jose, who, until he raced at Oamaru during the holidays, had not been seen with the colours up since February, was responsible for a very attractive effort at Riecarton recently. Sent six furlongs on the plough, lie ran the trip in Jmin. 15 4-5 sec-., which was decidedly the best of the morning. Last season his three successes included the Timaru Cup and the C.J.C. Epsom Handicap, while he was runner-up in the Wellington Cup to Stanchion. Don Jose is booked with Pixie Gold to race at Trentham agai: this January, l*ut he is not engaged r the Cup.
