DROWNED IN SURF
SWIMMER OVERCOME. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Thomas Eri<> Hugh Monro, a married man, manage|fof the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, and a son of Captain Monro, .chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, was drowned in -the surf at Waikuku beaeh this afternoon.
With a companion, Mr. J. D. Simpson, lie had gone far out and on the return journey both became exhausted. Their plight was noticed by a woman, who gave the alarm.
Afe Simpson managed to struggle asfHe, but when assistance reached MiJMonro he was dead.
Artificial respiration was resorted to by Dr. King when the body was brought ashore, but without avail.
