INFANTILE PARALYSIS
EPIDEMIC IN AUSTRALIA.
dominion position normal
WELLINGTON, Monday
The New Zealand Department of Health is in receipt of information from the Australian Health Department, which shows that both New South Wales and Queensland are experiencing an epidemic, fortunately not very extensive, of infantile paralysis. The position in New Zealand is normal. There have been a few sporadic cases, such as commonly occur at this time of year. The Department, however, as a precautionary measure, has taken the necessary action to ensure a supply of convalescent serum in the event of any widespread outbreak of the disease. Arrangements have been made for the public hospitals to have available a supply of the serum. It may be explained that convalescent serum is obtained from blood taken from persons who have recovered from a comparatively recent attack of the disease. Experience has shown that the administration of this serum in the initial stages of the disease will safeguard the individual from permanent paralysis or even worse results. —-(P.A.)
