YOUTH IN TROUBLE
DISAPPEARS WITH BICYCLE. GIVEN A CHANGE. YAsiCrdaS;. mornings about 11.30 o’clock a youth named Reginald Fawcett, 18 years of age, walked into the shop of Mr R. Russell, Queen Street, and asked if he had any second-hand bicycles for sale. On being shown a bicycle valued at £2, accused asked if he could have a trial and said he would not go further away than the corner of Chapel Street. The caller was given permission to take the bicycle for a trial run as far as the end of the street. However, ho disappeared round the corner of Chapel Street, and that was the last seen of him for some time. Mr Russell became rather dubious about his customer and notified tho police. Fawcett was later seen cycling in Belvedere Road, Carterton, and when stopped by the police and asked to account for the bicycle lie said that he had bought it two years ago at Taihape. Accused was later arrested and appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of unlawfully converting a bicycle to his own use. He pleaded guilty and after a homily on good behaviour by the Bench accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within twelve months if called on.
Messrs. E. G. Eton and C. M. Bowden presided on the Bench and the hope was expressed that the episode would be a lesson to Fawcett.
Sergt. Dyer said the accused was untruthful and loafed at home. When arrested Fawcett had said he came from Mangaweka but it was found later that he was a local youth.
