BOWLING

MTJTRIE CUP. (By ‘‘The Bowler.”) A game for this Cup was played on the Masterton Club’s green yesterday afternoon, between the holders, J. C. Ewington and E. W. Nielsen (s) of the ' Masterton Club, and F. Dean and F.

Dixon, (s) of the Park Club. I The green was in excellent order. On j the 6th head, the Park were leading by 1 4 points, the scores being Masterton 2, ' Park 6. On the next 5 heads Masterton put on 9 points, putting them five lin the lead. At the 12th head Park scored 2, and the following head Masterton scored a single, and on the 14th head the Park scored one, making the scores Masterton 12, Park 9. The figure 9 seemed to be the Park’s unlucky number, as they remained there ! for 6 consecutive heads, while Masterton put on 16 points, the score-boaid 1 at the 20th head showing Masterton 28, Park 9. The Park, by consistent drawing, put on 5 points on the last head, i the final scores being Masterton 28. ! Park 14. j The Park players were both “colts,”

Ijand for young players they put up a creditable performance. Their actual drawing was nearly equal to that of the ! Masterton players, but naturally the j “boys” lacked the variety of shots I which they will acquire after another two years’ bowling. Some adveisc comment was made on the fact that such 1 young bowlers should compete in the

■ Mutrie Cup. I But- I cannot see any objection to their competing; there is nothing against it in the rules regulating the

matches for the Mutrie Cup, and what I is more likely to improve the play of : young bowlers than competing against senior players? Young players in all branches of sport should have an opportunity of gaining experience. If I remember rightly, it was on the 19th December of last year, that two 1 of the oldest members of the Park Club were defeated in the Mutrie Cup by 17 1 points. j The “colts” in their match yesterday were defeated by only 14 points.
