SPEED ATTEMPT

NO TRIAL YESTERDAY.

BEACH STILL UNFIT,

NJNJ£T,Y MILE BEACH, This Day. The week-end at tTiS Ninety Mile Beach was a place of false alarms. On Saturday, “Wizard” Smith announced that he- would probably make a run, but after starting the engine in the garage he did not take the car out as he considered the beach was still unfit. Yesterday again the whole party was busy getting the ear ready to take the track, but although the engine started thrice, “Wizard” Smith did not make a run.

“Wizard” Smith thinks that early on Wednesday morning conditions will be perfect for attempting a record, probably on a ten-mile streten, as he wants to get a thorough feel of the car before- he attempts to assault the dying mile.

To-day, if the beach is suitable “Wizard” Smith will have a trial run,

About 6 o’clock on Saturday a number of local residents were disappointed and rather incensed over official action in posting police at approaches to the beach. Only official cars were allowed through and others were forced to stop four miles from the garage. Even after it had been announced that no trial would take place they were not allowed through and c-ould not see the Enterprise, Tlie result was a deputation to the Auckland Automobile Racing Club officials, but the original decision to close the beach to all but officials on the days of trials was adhered to.
