Mr. William Graham, who was President of the Board of Trade in the last Labour Government, has died of pneumonia. Miss Sybil Caselberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Caselberg, Masterton, returned homo to-day after a lengthy visit to England. The engagement is announced of sie Jean, eldest daughter of Mr Mrs A. MePhee, Gladstone, Wairarapa, to Wallis, second son of Mr and Mrs W. F. Browne, 37 Rawa Road, Kelburn. The engagement is of Millicent Evelyn, youngest drilighter of Mrs and the late Mr R. Falloon. of Masterton, to Frederick Westfield, eldest son of Mr and Mrs F. J. Staples, of Paliiatua. L Mr, G. H. Clarke, who has been so long and favourably known in this district is still hale and hearty in his S7th. year. He lias no less than five brothers and sisters alive, the “baby“ of the family, being in her 80th. year. Mr. Clarke came to New Zealand in 1572. Mr. G. Gundersen, who has again won the chess championship of New Zealand, is a lecturer in the Melbourne University. Mrs. Gundersen, who is ae- . companying her husband on his visit to New Zealand, is a sister to John Amadio, the famous flautist. 4 According to a Washington cable, General Dawes has announced that, ho intends to resign as Ambassaiftr to Great Britain after serving as ber of the United States delegation to Geneva during the Disarmament Conference. A Chicago report states that General Dawes stepped off the train on Saturday, smiled and, in thirteen words, dismissed all questions as to whether ho were a potential candidate for the Presidency: ‘lt’s all damn nonsense. There’s nothing to it. I won’t even discuss it.” A Wellington Press Association message reports the death of Mr. J. H. Richardson, C.M.G., formerly Commissioner of the Government Life Insurance Department. The late Mr. Richardson was born in Nelson on July 8, 1856. He was educated at Bishop’s School, Nelson (math, prizeman) and Nelson College (math, scholar). He passed and senior Civil Service examinations in 1873 (second place in both). He joined the Government Insurance Department. as a cadet in January, 1574,but resigned in September, 1577, owing to ill-health. Ho joined the Mutual Life Association of Australasia in IS7B and resigned in September, 1882, to return to the Government Insurance Department as Chief Clerk. He became Accountant in 1884, Secretary in ISB6, and Commissioner in IS9O. He was elected president of the Insurance Institute of New Zealand in 1900 and became a member of the Native Trust Office Board in 1924'.

The death occurred at Palmerston North at an early hour yesterday morning of Mr. C. G. Hansen, a former well-known resident of Carterton. The late Mr. Hansen, who was 47 years of age, was the second son of JHansen, of Palmerston North. He waa born at Hokitika and spent his early youth at Palmerston North. On leaving school he was apprenticed to the watchmaking trade. After completing his time, he went abroad for further experience in the trade. On returning to New Zealand he was associated with his brother in business in Kimbolton. He later established a watchmaking and jewellery business in Carterton, which he carried on for about ten years until failing- health compelled him to retire twdlve months ago. During liis residence in Carterton, the late. Mr. Hansen took an active interest in several local organisations. He was associated with the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Tradesmen’s Association, the Club and other sports bodies.
