Sunday play has been ■carried on this summer by a tennis club which leases courts in one of the Auckland City Council’s reserves at E'psom, but the practice is now' to cease. A city bylaw, apparently passed many years ago, states that “no person shall play cards or engage in any athletic exercise or any other game in any of the parks or reserves on Sunday. ’ ’ The Sunday tennis having been brought under its notice, the council has had no option but to inform the club that it is a breach of the by-laws and must be discontinued. “There are far too many lap dogs and poodles in the country,” said a councillor when fixing the fees for the registration of dogs was before the Malcara County Council' recently. “There have been numerous complaints from farmers, and with good reason,” he continued. “I have seen dogs come off my farm with their jaws dripping with blood, and I have had lambs torn to pieces by these useless dogs, which are to be seen in scores. The place is infested ■with them.” Another councillor said, “I lost over 100 sheep in one hit in 1930. A neighbour just below me has ten or twelve pet dogs. ’ ’ The first speaker said he had seen a woman the other day with a team of little dogs which had coats and trousers on. A suggestion was made that the registration fee for worthless dogs should be raised to the maximum limit, 10s.
