COSY THEATRE. “UNDER SUSPICION.” The leading roles in “Under Suspicion,” Fox Movietone drama of the Northwest Mounted Police, which opens a two-day season at the Cosy Theatre to-day with two sessions daily, are played by Lois Moran and J. Harold Murray. Also in the cast are J. M. Kerrigan, Marie Saxon, Lumsden Hare and others. “Under Suspicion,” which was written by Tom Barry, author of “In Old Arizona” and “Song o’ My Heart,” tells the story of a. British war ace who, in order to cover up the disastrous blunder made by his younger brother and to protect his family name, determines to lose his identity by enlisting in the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police, under an assumed name. He meets and falls in love with a beautiful and charming Canadian girl, only to discover that her brother was a victim of his brother’s blunder and that the girl suspects him of having caused her brother’s death. A great part of the picture was photographed and recorded in beautiful and picturesque Jasper National Park, amid the majestic Canadian Rockies. The delightful songs which are heard during the action of the picture were written especially for the production by James F. Hanley and Joseph McCarthy. The supports include two Fox Movietone News, a travelogue entitled “Gateway To India” and a comedy “Prize Puppies.” On to-mor-row afternoon’s programme is episode 2 of the new serial “Finger Prints.” Box plans are at Fare’s or ring Theatre after 6.30 p.m.

“REMOTE CONTROL.” “Remote Control,” in which William Haines will make his latest talkie appearance at the Cosy Theatre, starting on Monday, is regarded as the best picture in which the versatile star hasbeen seen siiiee “Alias Jimmy Valentine.” Like the former hit, “Remote Control” combines a mystery plot with comedy situations. However, the new talkie is particularly of interest in affording Haines an hitherto unrevealed outlet for his talents as a comedian, namely, that of an impersonator of well-known radio stars. This occurs in a sequence in which Haines puts on an entire radio programme by himself, imitating prominent “ether” favourites. In the supporting cast are Charles King, Mary Doran, Polly Moran, John Miljan and J. C. Nugent. Box plans open to-morrow at Yare’s.

REGENT THEATRE. • “TAMING OF THE SHREW.” Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks are together for the first time in an all-talking, all-laughing, film version of Shakespeare ’s ever modern comedy, “The Taming of the Shrew,” which comes to the Regent Theatre to-day with special matinees daily at 2.15 p.m. This uproarious comedy has 'been rocking the “world with laughter for 300 years. It unfolds the cyclonic romance of Katherine the Shrew and Petruchio the Shrewd, of how she was “wooed and wedded, and the house rid of her,” and of how, subsequently, the “Devil’s Dame” was made over into a meek mouse, to an accompaniment of the craziest love-making in the whole history of literature. As Katherine, and as Petruchio, the swashbuckler, Miss Pickford and Mr Fairbanks have found their most brilliant roles, and their coappearance, for the first time, in this dazzling comedy/marks an event of unparalleled importance to everyone, offering, as it does, the finest in motion picture entertainment. Plans are now open aif Clarke’s, where patrons are advised to reserve seats without delay.

OPERA HOUSE. ‘'ALIAS FRENCH GERTIE.” All Opera House patrons to-night and to-morrow night will be pleasureablv surprised and fascinated by the meteoric screen personality of Bebe Daniels in her stirring role in “Alias French Gertie.” In this picture she is 'seen as a female Raffles. The man in the story is well played by Ben Lyon, who makes his first screen appearance opposite Miss Daniels, in this film. The talkie describes the adventures of Gertie, always scheming and planning successful coups on the rich with the aid of her accomplice; then suddenly realising, after he is caught and sentenced to a year in gaol, that the price is too high for the rewards. On the same programme Rod La Rocque in “Beau Bandit,” a powerful story built round the Old West. La Rocque is seen as a suave gentlemanly bad man. Screening to-morrow night only is the second instalment of the serial “Finger Prints.” Box plans are at Vare’s or ring Theatre after 7 p.m. “A NOTORIOUS AFFAIR.” “Top Speed” is merely a relative term, according to Joe E. Brown, star of the lively production which comes to the Ojiera House on Monday for two nights. The picture features a highly exciting speedboat race. “The greatest thrill of my life came in riding in these speedboats at between 50 and 60 miles an hour,” said Brown. “I’ve travelled 145 miles an hour in an airplane, but you obtain no suc-h sense of. speed in the air as you do through the water. It seems at least three times as fast.” Mervyn Leßoy directed. Bernice Claire, Jack Whiting, Frank McHugh and Laura Lee are in the cast. ‘ ‘ Top Speed ’ ’ is an excellent comedy with Joe E. Brown at his best. In the same programme is Billie Dove in “A Notorious Affair.” Box plgns open at Vare’s ffo-morrow.
