DIMPOSTER OF WORST TYPE.” SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, Thursday. An astonishing tale of fraud and credulity was told in the S.M. Court to-day when Claude McLaughlin, aged 21, alias Claude Dolores, alias Dr. Claude Schneider, was charged with having obtained £92 by fraud, stealing £lO in cash and a typewriter, telling fortunes (two counts), and intoxication in a ear. The accused was arrested last week and remanded, but yesterday, when he went to the police station to report, he arrived in a car, drunk.

The police said that in January an hotel waitress went to the accused to have her fortune told. He told her she would be lucky if she invested. He was running a rodeo company, and he invited lier to. invest with him. She gave him altogether £92, including £SO for “stamp duty.” Erom another man he borrowed a typewriter, which he immediately sold. A tram conductor who had his fortune told gave accused two £5 notes.

The detective concluded: “He is a pure, unadulterated impostor of the worst type.” Counsel said that the accused would make repayments'.

The Magistrate (Mr Hunt): “Will he? He won’t be earning for twelve months.”

Accused was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment:
