Jordan), referring subsequently to the estimates as approved by the Council. “Wo shall be carrying out as much work as last year, we will be dismissing no one, and at the same time the general rate has been decreased from 3-Jd to 3 3-Sd an the pound, which is equal to a reduction of ten per cent on the general rate. This reduction amounts to a very small sum as far as most individual ratepayers are con-corned, but it will be of some benefit to the large ratepayer. Had we not received a telegram from the Prime Minister advising a temporary continuance of the No. 5 Scheme,” said Mr Jordan, “I think the council would have decided on no reduction in the
genera] rate in order to make some provision for the unemployed.” Commenting on the reduction of the wages of employees governed by awards and also those of the park staff, the Mayor stated that the Council’s decision would mean that the £4 per week men, of whom there were three, would receive £3 16s 4d, while the £4 6s 2d men, of whom there were fifteen, would receive £4 Os 3d.
An expenditure of £2BOO on the tar sealing of borough streets was to be made during the year, as compared with £3IOO last year, stated Mr Jordan. This would allow the same amount of work of this nature to be carried out as last year, taking the cut in wages into consideration. The work proposed would mean the sealing of about another two miles of streets. Provision was made for the carrying out of a little more kerbing this year, the proposed expenditure being £645, against £575 expended last year. As to the reconditioning of footpaths, not quite so much work was proposed this year. There was a reduction of £3OO in the Park estimates, while another item, the last payment in respect to South Park, a sum of £164 6s 6d would not recur next year.. In addition the 'Council had on hand, as at April Ist, £7OO worth of material, an item that did not appear on the estimates.
