A COUNTY CONTRACT.
COUNCIL’S ACTION CRITICISED. The action of the Masterton County Council in accepting the tender of an outside firm for a recent carting contract is being strongly criticised by the carriers in the Wairarapa. One man closely connected with the transport business in Masterton stated that in his opinion, the local firms should have the preference. In referring to the contract in .question, the supplying and carting of gravel to the Mangaparuparu road, lie said the contract had been given to an outside firm which did not have a. stake in the town or district. It was admitted that the difference between the amount of the lowest local tender was fairly wide, but it was pointed out that the Masterton County Council shared in the heavy traffic license fees paid by the local firms and therefore should have the preference. One statement made, subsequently found 'incorrect, set tho difference in the tenders at one penny per cubic yard, but on inquiries being made at the County Council office, Mr J. C. D. Mack ley, the County Clerk, said that the difference was considerably more than that.
