GUNMAN IN COURT.

LINGLE CASE SEQUEL. NEW YORK, Monday. At Chicago, Leo Brothers, reputed St. Louis gunman, was given .14 years in the State penitentiary for the murder of Alfred Lingle, Chicago reporter, after the jury had debated for 27 hours. This is one of the few murder trials recorded in which a verdict lias been sought without some sort of direct evidence leading to a motive for the killing. The case pivoted wholly on identification. The defence will receive a hearing for an application for a new trial on April 17 th. Brothers’ only comment, made to his guard, was; “Let’s duck.” (On January Sth, the capture of the murderer of Alfred Lingle, the Chicago “Tribune” reporter, was announced by Pat Roche, investigator for the State Attorney. Brothers was wanted in St. Louis for gang murder, and was positively identified as the killer. A sensation was caused in Chicago in June of last year by the murder of Alfred Lingle, well known for his familiarity with the underworld, who was shot when about to depart on a tram journey. Later the disclosure was made that Lingle had been depositing large sums of money at his bank each month, and was a very wealthy man. He lost £40,000 on the stock market recently. A clergyman at a meeting of ministers made the charge that some Chicago reporters were “No better than crooks themselves*.”)
