FILM TAXATION.
THE HOLD-UP. GOVERNMENT’S INTENTIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. Referring to film hire taxation during the debate on the Finance Bill, in the House of Representatives this morning, the Acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, said the Government would consent to take off the present footage duty to facilitate a settlement of the hold-up that had arisen as the result of the protest of the distributing companies against the new film hire tax. It was also willing to review this tax in all its aspects after it had been in operation for a reasonable period, and, if it were found to be dicicult to operate, or was for any other reason unsuitable, necessary amendments w r ould be made next session. At the same time, the Government was willing to consider any other alternative method of ad valorem taxation that might be more acceptable to the industry generally. He hoped these proposals would be acceptable to the distributing companies, but if they persisted in the hold-up the Government -would have to take strong measures in the interests of exhibitors and the public.’
