ST. MATTHEW’S CHURCH.
SALE OF WORK. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The St. Matthew’s Parish Hall presented a gay and animated scene yesterday on the occasion of the openingday of the sale of work organised by the members of the Ladies’ Guild for the reduction of the Church debt. Ranges of decorated stalls lavishly stocked offered many and varied attractions and buyers attended in large numbers throughout the afternoon and evening. Brisk business was clone and it should yield satisfactory financial results. The sale is to be continued to-day. The function was opened by the Mayoress (Mrs T. Jordan), who was welcomed by the Vicar, the Rev. E. J. Rich. A beautiful bouquet was presented to Mrs Jordan by little Miss Vivian Rich. The Mayoress, who was received with acclamation, said she was very pleased to be there that afternoon to open their sale of work and congratulated the members of the Ladies’ Guild and the stallholders on the beautiful display they had made. In thanking the Mayoress and all who had assisted in promoting the sale of work, Mr Rich expressed a hope that their efforts would be highly successful. They .were all united,, he said," in' their desire to reduce the Church debt. Last evening a play was staged by members of the Girls’ Club and a number of vocal items were contributed, Mrs J. A, Rosewarne acting as accompahiste. , The programme was much enjoyed and appreciated, the various performers being warmly applauded. The following are the stall-holders: — Cakes: Mesdames Keir, Joblin and' Alexander; sweets, Mesdames Denbee, Hawker and Misses Denbee; produce] Mesdames Beetham, Jordan and Dawson; books, Mrs J. Welch; jumble, Mesdames Betteridge and Spackman; work, Mesdames Coleman, Poison and Liddle, 'Misses Armitage, Shoosmith and Creswell; flowers, Mesdames Sheet, Robieson and E. O. Smith, Misses Martin, Johns and Perry; baby stall, Girls' Club; fancy, Mesdames Hatch, Yates, Sutherland and Russell, Miss Sturdee; pork pies, Mesdames Francis and Norris; toy stall and bran tubs, Sunday School teachers; flower competition, Mrs Stidolph; fruit salad and soft drinks, Miss Boddington; afternoon tea, , Mesdames Hope, Taylor, Armitage, Russell, Southgate, Clarke and Richard, Miss Stidolph. Competitibns were won by Messrs. W. Clarke and J. Ninnes. The sale will be continued this afternoon and evening. Admission will be free at both sessions. In the evening a brief ■ concert programme will be given.
