ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.

A BUSINESS COMMITTEE. FORMED AT MEETING. A largely-attended meeting of members and supporters of the Masterton Orchestral Society was held last evening. Much enthusiasm was shown and the existence and future prospects of the Orchestra are now (regarded as assured. Mr D. A. Pickering (chairman) welcomed members of the Music Week Committee to whom the society was indebted for a renewal of interest, and a strong Business Committee was elected.

As a Tesult of a short canvass, close on 150 honorary members were elected. The subscription was fixed at 10s 6d, which entitles the holder to two tickets for each of two concerts during the year.

The business committee appointed is as follows:—Messrs. C. M. Bowden, Y. Donald, T. F. Watson, F. Clarke, W. H. Saunders, N. Leighton and W. E. Knott. As Mr H. W. -Slater, who has acted as hon. secretary for the last three years, finds it impossible to devote- the time necessary, he asked to be relieved, and Mr E. Bell, agreeing at the request of the meeting, was duly elected to that position. Mr Jas. Candy, conductor, was authorised to order required sets of music from Great Britain for the forthcoming season. On the arrival of the music, the Orchestra will resume practice.

The canvass for members is being continued and those desirous of joining should get in touch with members of the committee or the hon. secretary, whose address is Leecroft Chambers. The standard of the performance of the Orchestra during Music Week, under the eonductorship of Mr Candy, is a guarantee of its capabilities and patrons and intending patrons may depend on getting a musical treat. A very hearty and -sincere vote of thanks was passed to Mr A. B. Wallace and his Music Week Committee for their timely and valuable assistance to the society.
