WEYLER DEAD.
THE ‘ ‘BUTCHER OF CUBA.” MADRID, Tuesday. General Weyler, the so-called “Butcher of Cuba, ’ ’ is dead at the age of 92. General Weyler was of Prussian descent. He was trained at the Military College at Toledo. He distinguished himself in the expedition to San Lomingo by a daring reconnaissance for which he was decorated. He served against the Cubans from 1868 to 18*2. He returned to Spain in 1873 and took an active part against the Carlists, foir which he was raised to the rank of general of division. He was captaingeneral in the Canary Isles and afterwards in the Balearie Islands and the Philippines, where he dealt very sternly wit lithe native rebels. On returning to Spain in 1892 he was put in command of the 6th Army Corps in the Basque Provinces and Navarre, where he soon quelled agitations. In 'Catalonia ho made himself the terror of the anarchists and socialists.
Weyler was sent in 1896 to crush the rebellion in Cuba, and he adopted a policy of inexorable repression . which raise da storm of indignation and led to ai demand from America for his recall. This recall was granted, but Weyler afterward asserted that he would have stamped out the rebellion in six months if he had been left alone. Weyler’s appointment in 1900 as cap-tain-general of Madrid resulted in more than one Ministerial crisis. He was twice Minister of War, in 1901 and 1905, and was captain-general in Barcelona in 1909 and quelled the disturbance connected with the execution of Francisco Ferrer without bloodshed.
