PROFESSIONALS AT PLAY. N.S.W. CHAMPIONSHIP. SYDNEY, Tuesday. The professional golf championship of New South Wales commenced to-day in rough, squally weather, at the Royal links, Rose Bay. To-day’s play was 36 holes stroke, and the leading sixteen qualify for the match play to-morrow. F. Popplewell is defending the title, while F. Eyre, the open champion of Australia, and other prominent players, are taking part. The following qualified:—Bogler, 74 and 79; Souter, 75 and 80; Bray, 78 and 78; Eyre, 80 and 79; Campbell, 78 and 81; Richardson, SI and 78; Corry, 78 and 82; Downs, 81 and 80; McDonald, 80 and 82; Clark, 84 and 78; Cates, 79 and 84; Cohen, SI and 83; Heard, 81 and 83; Ginman, 83 and 82; Thompson, 81 and 81; Giles, 81 and 84. Both Popplewell and D. Spence have been eliminated. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. THE SEMI-FINALS. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. In the semi-finals of the ladies’ golf championship this morning, Miss Hay beat Mrs Spiers, 4 and 3, and Miss Gaisford beat Miss Loughnan, 5 and 4.
