THEFT AND FORGERY.
TWO MEN CHARGED. (By Telegraph—Press Association). STRATFORD, Tuesday. William Holmes and Frederick Dodd appeared at the Magistrate’s Court today on a number of charges of theft, forgery, and uttering, the sum involved being £47. Holmes was employed by Mr Alex McMullian as a drover and stock buyer, and was provided with a book of signed cheques for the purchase of cattle. The police alleged that on six occasions cheques were made out, endorsed, and uttered. Sergeant Power said that evidence would be led to show that in none of the six cases was stock received, while in two cases persons to whom cheques had allegedly been issued could not be found.
In evidence, McMullan said that so far as he knew no cattle had been received from the persons named on the six cheques produced. Evidence was given by a number of persons denying that they had endorsed the cheques produced. Other people gave evidence of having cashed cheques. These included Percy Rayner, barman, of llawera; John McDonnell, barman, of New Plymouth; William H. Harris, restaurant proprietor, of New Plymouth; and L. P. O’Neill, hotel proprietor, Inglewood. Dodd and Holmes, who pleaded not guilty, were committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
