Two burglars attempting to rob the Coonabarabran branch of the Bank of New South Wales early this morning were caught red-handed by the local police after an exchange of shots. William Thomas, aged 22, the ledgerkeeper, was the only occupant of the bank, and he was awakened by the burglars, who hit him on the head with a piece of iron, gagged and bound him. He managed to get free, however, and escaped unnoticed. He then brought the police, who found the burglars in the act of wrecking the strongroom door, and commanded them to surrender.
