CRIME IN SYDNEY.
BURGLARS CAUGHT. AFTER EXCHANGE OF SHOTS. Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, Friday. Two burglars attempting to rob the Coonabarabran branch of the Bank of New South Wales early this morning were caught red-handed by the local police after an exchange of shots. William Thomas, aged 22, the ledgerkeeper, was the only occupant of the bank, and he was awakened by the burglars, who hit him on the head with a piece of iron, gagged and bound him. He managed to get free, however, and escaped unnoticed. He then brought the police, who found the burglars in the act of wrecking the strongroom door, and commanded them to surrender. Several shots were fired, the burglars using Thomas’s revolver. Finally they submitted to arrest. The bank’s strongroom contained upwards of £6OOO. , . A BRUTAL ASSAULT. SYDNEY, Friday. Footpads brutally assaulted an elderly man named Charles Ewen at Mascot in broad daylight and stole a large sum of money, representing the takings of Ewen’s son’s butchers’ shop, which he was carrying to the bank. A burglar last night entered the bedroom of the New Zealand trainer, H. B. Lorigan, and disturbed Mrs Lorigan, who screamed. The thief escaped without obtaining any money.
