TURF NOTES.

Commendation’s three-quarter brother, Esteem, is due to make his first public appearance in the Nursery Handicap at Masterton to-morrow.

Rosendo, a three-year-old winner at the recent Randwiek meeting, is a brother to Rampion, who was a highclass three-year-old, at which age he defeated Limerick'on more than one occasion.

The New Zealand Gup candidates seen out at Otaki were Merry Damon, Pahu and Mount Shannon. All will have to improve considerably to have a chance in the two miles, but Merry Damon looks likely to make most progress between now and the day of the race.

The Taranaki jumper, Omeo, injured his leg slightly while playing in a paddock a few weeks ago, but lie is all right again. He is having an easy time, only doing trotting and cantering, but there is no hurry for him, as he will not be required for racing until later in the season.

Seven two-year-old races have been decided in the North Island this season, and each has been won by a different youngster. They are King Colossus, La Poupee, Baroscope, Royal 'Visitor, Korokio, Cape Gold and Curie. Only two of these winners are engaged in. the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham, these being King Colossus and La Poupee, both of whom hail from Awapuni, wlieer Gesture, the best two-vear-old of last season, was trained for her early engagements.

Few people are aware that Night Raid, the sire of Phar Lap and Nightmarch, was sold in England for 120 guineas. That was in December, 1920, and he was shipped to Australia on the same day, to become a gilt-edged bargain through siring two high-class horses. A five-year-old horse named Simon Square w r as passed in at. W^OO 1 guineas, which, it was announced, was below the reserve. Simon Square stood last year at a fee of 19 guineas, which would go to show that he has not been a stud success. The sum of £53,000,,.;,. with certain contingencies, was paid by a syndicate when the American-bred ■•} horse Tracery was taken back to England a few years ago. It proved an unlucky speculation, for Tracery succumbed to an ailment.
