PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr W. H. Cruicksliank, of Wellington, is on a visit to Masterton. The. Rev. E. J. Rich, vicar of St. Margaret’s Parish, Taihape, will leave at the end of July to take up his new duties in Masterton.

Miss Aroha Clifford, of Christchurch, the well-known airwoman, leaves for England next week, accompanied by her father, Mr Walter Clifford.

The engagement is announced of John, son of the late John and Mary Gray of Lansdowne, Masterton, to Jessie Gertrude, second daughter of the late John and Mrs McLennan, of ‘ ‘ Rangatawa, ’ ’ Halcombe. Several changes are being made in the staff at the Grey town Post Office. Mr S. Workman has been transferred to Wellington and Mr O’Kane, exchange clerk, is to exchange places with Mr D. Montgomerie, postman. Mr and Mrs George Warrington, who are leaving Belvedere, after a residence of fourteen years, to reside at Pahautea, near Featherston, were farewelled by their fellow settlers on Friday evening. ' Mrs Warrington was presented with an eiderdown quilt, Mr Warrington a smoker’s outfit, and the children suitable gifts. At the annual meeting of the Wairarapa branch of the Plunket Society the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mrs W. J. Martin; vice-presidents, Mesdames W. B. Martin, B. W. Matthews; secretary and treasurer, Mrs Q. Donald; hon. auditor, Mr J. G. McKenzie; committee, six delegates from each centre. At a meeting of the committee of the Wanganui Jockey Club yesterday afternoon Mr D. A. Robbins was appointed secretary, to 1 fill the vacancy caused through the death of Mr W. Hall. Mr Robbins has been a member of the staff since 1907, in which year Mr Hall urns appointed secretary. In 1923 Mr Robbins was appointed assistant secretary. A link with early Westland and Ashburton was .severed by the death yesterday at Ashburton of Mr Albert Roberts, 84. A native of Tasmania, the late Mr Roberts joined the Bank of Kew Zealand at Christchurch and from 1869 to 1874 managed the Greenstone and Hokitika branches. He was associated with the late Mr R.‘J. Seddon in the political activities from 1874 to 1879. Mr Roberts later managed the Ashburton branch, retiring to enter other activities.

The high respect in which the late Mrs David Caselborg was held by the residents of Masterton and district was shown yesterday afternoon, -when the mortal remains were conveyed to the Masterton Railway Station. The interment is to take place at Wellington this morning. There was a large number of wreaths from sympathising friends. The pall-bearers were Messrs S. Ralph (representing the staff of the W.F.C.A. Ltd.), A. T. P. Hubbard, G. W. Sellar, C. F. Yallance, S. J. W. Gill and D. M. Graham.

The death occurred at Palliation of Mr Francis Edward Beaufort, aged 43 years. Deceased, who. was born at Pahiatua, was the eldest son of the late Mr John William Beaufort, a pioneer settlor. Deceased as a boy joined the staff of the W.F.C'.A., Ltd. He subsequently left the town for several years and entered the employ of the late Mr J. Powell at Malcuri. Deceased enlisted for the Great War, seeing considerable service and earned the Military Medal. Upon liis return he lived at te Kuiti for a short period, but in 1918 he rejoined his old firm, the W.F.C.A., Pahiatua, and up to the time of his death was storeman.

Many people in Masterton will regret to learn of the death at Dunedin of Mr W\ A. Low, the well known theatrical agent and former champion middle distance runner of New Zealand. Tiie late Mr Low was one of the finest .-■bylists who ever broke the tape in X.Z. Under medium height, but of trim, compact physique in accord with his height, he had a beautiful stride, well from the hips, and to see him come through the limit men in an A’SO yards handicap was a spectacle not ■easily forgotten. For a long time he was associated with the WilloughbyWard and later with the Hugh J. Ward companies as advance agent and manager, and during the last twenty years had travelled Now Zealand up and down “advancing” many companies. He visited Masterton on many occasions, and had a host of friends here.

The interment of Mr W. S. Jago took place in the Masterton Cemetery this morning. A very large number of citizens followed the funeral cortege from nis late residence in Essex street to St. Matthew’s Church, where a service was held, and thence to the place of interment. There was a large attendance of the Masonic brethren, and also representatives of the Masterton musical societies, Masterton Bowling Club, Masterton Savage Club, and other bodies in which the late Mr Jago took a keen interest. As a mark of respect to its late' secretary, the premises of the W.F.C.A., Ltd., were closed for an hour this morning. The general manager (Mr C. M. Bowden) represented the Association, and other members of the staff also attended. The Eev. W. Bullock conducted the service at St. Matthew’s Church, which was a choral one, and at the graveside. A Masonic service was also conducted. The pall-bearers were Messrs G. F. Seandrett, A. E. Winzenberg, L. S. Nicol, H. P. Hugo, G. Bushton and F. Henry.
