LAWN TENNIS.
WIMBLEDON TOURNAMENT. ANDREWS AND MALFROY WIN. LONDON, Tuesday. At Wimbledon, in the tennis championship, first round of the singles, Andrews (New Zealand) beat Willard (Australia), 6/2, 7/5, 6/3; Allison (America) beat Moon (Australia), 6/1, 6/3, 6/3; Crawford and Hopman, Australians, had easy victories. Malfroy (New Zealand) beat Gaslini (Italy), 6/3, 6/1, 6/2; Cocliet (France) beat Timmer (Holland), 6/4, 9/11, 4/6, 6/4, 6/2. Other winners included Tilden, Brugnon and Austin. Twenty-three nations are competing. Willard was unable to handle shots in the strong, baffling wind. He exploited a fine variety of strokes, but wanted a little more luck. Many excellent returns and short volleys, looking like winners, found the net by the merest fraction. However hard Willard drove, 1 the cross-wind took off pace. Nevertheless, Andrews, with a greater knowledge of the conditions, played magnificently, notably bringing off sideline cross-court winners. Willard put up a great fight in the second set, until the New Zealander evened, 5 all. Malfroy caused surprise by defeating Gaslini, who, however, is a better doubles player.
