INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE. There is a substantial increase in the infectious diseases list for the Wellington health district, issued yesterday, as compared with the bulletin for the previous week, A marked increase of diphtheria eases in the WanganuiHorowhenua and Wairarapa-Hawlce’s Bay areas is recorded, while scarlet fever shows a slight decrease. The returns are as follows, with the previous week’s figures given in parentheses:— Wanganui-Horowlienua: Scarlet fever, 4 (7); diphtheria, S (1); pneumonia, 6 (1); tuberculosis, 2 (0); lethargic encephalitis, 1 (0). Total, 21 (0). Wairarapa-Hawke’s Bay: Scarlet fever, 2 (1); pneumonia, G (1); diphtheria, 4 (0); enteric fever, 2 (0); tuberculosis, 1 (0); pneumonic influenza, 1 (0); erysipelas, 1 (O'); puerperal fever, 1 (0). Total, IS (2), Central Wellington: Scarlet fever, iG (7); diphtheria, G (S); tuberculosis, 3 (2); pneumonic influenza, 1 (2); pneumonia, 1 (2); erysipelas, 2 (0). Nelson-Marlborough: Scarlet} fever, 2 (2). Grand total, GO (36). The returns issued for the preceding four weeks give totals of 51, 27, 31 and 36, respectively, an average of 36 a week.
