N.Z. PLANTS.

ADDRESS BY MR V. C. DAVIES. A very interesting address on the cultivation of New Zealand plants was given last night by Mr V. C. Davies, a noted authority on this subject. The address, which was given in the Lecture Room of the Municipal Buildings, was largely attended. The president of the Wairarapa Small Holdings Association, Mr L. Robinson, presided. Mr Davies opened his address by giving a brief outline of the flora of New Zealand, and an indication of its affinities and its many noted plants. Of the 1500 species recorded as natives of Now Zealand, 1143 were indigenous. Tlie Dominion possessed one of the most interesting floras of the world. Mr Davies proceeded to detail the correct procedure in collecting plants from the bush, whieh, he said, was possible throughout the year, provided the conditions were right. Small hardened plants, from three to six inches in height, should be chosen. He then outlined in detail the correct method of planting and cultivation, and the precautions to be observed to ensure the best growing conditions. The importance of the requisite shelter was stressed, and Mr Davies mentioned native shelter trees which were most suitable for various localities.

By means of illustrating his address, Mr Davies exhibited specimens of many of the species touched upon. Ilis address, which was listened to with close attention by those present, contained many valuable hints and suggestions as to the growing of the different species of native trees, shrubs and ferns.

A number of questions were answer ed at the conclusion of the address.
