AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
masterton club. “We have to express regret that, in presenting the annual report of the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club for the season 1925-29, the balance sheet shows a deficiency of £26 Us 3d for the season’s working, against a credit balance last year of £1 18s Sd,” states the annual report of the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club for the past year. “The loss mainly occurred through the heavy charges made for the use of the electric lights used for night sports meetings, also by the bad state of the fences surrounding the Oval, enabling so many to obtain admittance without paying.” Taking into consideration the charge of £6 us for. the use of lights and £2 10s for the use of the oval for night meetings, over and above tlu? prize money, etc., wo think the club has
done very well to be able to _ come through with such a small deficiency. It would be advisable for the incoming committee to give the above matter careful consideration before running further electric light- meetings. During the season the club held its usual evening runs, which were a great success in keeping the members together, a nil also in bringing out new members. This has brought the club’s active membership up to 63. The most outstanding performer was undoubtedly T. Oakley, who again proved himself equal to any other cyclist in the Dominion. The performance of €. L. Osborne m winning the half-mile c-ycle provincial championship was also creditable. Special credit must be given to the younger riders who were very successful of nth or snorts meetings. The club
wishes to extend its congratulations to T. McCord upon his success in riding into third place in the Wanganui to Palmerston North road race. The annual sports meeting on January 22nd, 1929, was a success from the competitors’ and public point of view. At this meeting, A. Anderson, of Pctone, ncst'n 1 in winning Mr F. Peter-
sen’s cup, which was donated for the half-mile run, the cup being won. outright by A. Anderson. The club wishes to* extend its hearty thanks to Mr F. Petersen for donating this handsome cup. The club, did not enter a team in the country club championships, which were held on Easter Monday. The main reasons for not sending a team were that the competitors could not secure sufficient leave, and that the Nireaha Club was holding its sports on that
clay, and at that meeting Masterton competitors were expected to compete. Your committee wishes to extend its thanks to Jack Carswell for his sportsmanship in coming to Masterton to compete, also to Mr J. V. Dolan for lus valuable services towards the lady athletes. He coached them all the season, and, judging by the interest the ladies havo taken in the sports, the club wi benefit next season. Your committee also wishes to extend its thanks to Mr \\r s L. Dickson and Mr G. Selby, as starters, to Mr J. Nyhan as handicapper and to Mr Horton, caretaker of the Parle, for their valuable services, and also to the Press and its staff, the patron president, officials and supporters, for’the assistance they have given to the club.”
