Captain J. Houston, champion heavyweight boxer of the British Army before the war, is in Auckland. He belongs to the Black Watch Regiment, stationed in India, and is on leave pending retirement. He intends to settle finally in Auckland.
The death has occurred in Nelson of Mr Charles Eraser at the age of 95 years. Deceased was a retired police oflicer with a long and honourable record of service both in New Zealand and in Australia. He retired from the New Zealand farce on a pension 35
years ago. On Thursday evening an enjoyable farewell party was tendered to the Rev. W. and Mrs Raine, of Carterton, at the Longbush schoolroom, as a token of esteem upon the occasion -of their approaching departure for Eastbourne. At an interval in the proceedings, Mr Tweedell, on behalf of the gathering, handed Mr Raine a fountain pen and Loewc pipe, Mrs Raine an electric kettle and iron, and Master Dennis Raine an Eversharp pencil. The death occurred yesterday at “Keintom Combe,” Waiau, of Mrs A.
R. Cliaffey, widow of the late Colonel R. A. Chaffer, at the age of 04 years. She was a daughter of the late Dr. G. Webster who, prior to taking up sheepfarming in Otago, in the “Sixties”—when he introduced Romney Marsh sheep to New Zealand —was stationed at Melbourne at SurgeonGeneral of the British military forces in Australia. Mrs Cliaffey leaves a grown-up family of three sons, Messrs. Sam, Ralph and James Cliaffey and a daughter, Mrs Johnston. The death took place at a private hospital in Danncvirke, on August 12, of Mr William McLeod. He was born at Pahoa, Martinborough, and his early life was spent in Martinborough. Of late years Mr McLeod had been farming near Danncvirke. He leaves a widow, two sons—Mr Harry McLeod, of Johnsonville, and Mr lan McLeod, of Danncvirke —two daughters—Mrs Webster, of Petone, and Mrs Pollard, of Danncvirke —also two brothers—Mr John McLeod, of Ashhurst, and Mr Donald McLeod, of Martinborough—and two sisters —Mrs Jackson, of Greytown, and Mrs Bruce, of Ixopuaranga—to mourn their loss. The Wairarapa Racing Club has elected the following officers for the ensuing year: —Patron, Mr S. Cundy; president, Mr W. E. Bidwill; vice-presi-dents, Messrs Q. Donald, C. Elgar and T. Benton; lion, judge, Mr J. W. Card; lion, treasurer, Mr Arch Clark; lion, timekeeper, Mr T. Benton; lion, clerk of scales, Mr J. Cross; lion, surgeons, Drs. M. B. M. Tweed, H. E. Webb and G. S. Sharpe; lion, veterinary surgeon, Mr S. Fletcher; auditors, Messrs G. W. Sellar and ,L. 11. Smart; stewards, Messrs R. N. Barton, D. Cameron, D. C. Collins, Jack Martin, A. Campbell Pearce and D. H. S. Riddiford. Members of the Masterton staff of the Public Trust Office last evening farewelled and made a presentation to Mr C. A. Hendry, who lias been promoted to the position of District Public Trustee at Hastings. In presenting Mr Hendry, on behalf of the staff, with a handsome ornamental clock and a travelling case, the Ds.rLt Trustee, Mr S. J. Smith, spoke of the regard and respect in which the recipient was held by members of the Masterton staff, with whom he has been associated for the past eight years and said that while they'all greatly regretted Mr Hendry’s departure, they congratulated him heartily upon his promotion. Mr Hendry suitably replied. At the annual meeting of the Carterton Horticultural and Industrial Society votes of condolence were passed with the relatives of the late Mesdames W. Abbott and T. J. Rathbone. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and a vote of thanks was accorded Mr 11. M. B. Trapp for auditing the books. The subscription was fixed at lb/-, and the show dates were approved as under: —November 22, 1929, and March 7, 1930. Two new members were elected and six resignations accepted. A donation of £1 worth of shrubs to beautify the showgrounds was made to the Wairarapa P. and A. Society. It was decided that where a judge considered an exhibit worthy of a second prize, the award be J*aid irrespective of the number of entries in the class.
