POSITION IN ENGLAND. LONDON, Tuesday. It is understood that the Government is considering a reduction of stamp dutv on letters, which is now lid to the old rate of Id. Penny postage was introduced 57 years ago, and the rate was only increased to INI as ,i temporary measure to meet the financial stringency caused by the war. The Post Office has been asked by the Government to make a return of the estimated loss to the Exchequer ot the reduction to Id. The business community has frequentlv pressed for such a concession, and*it is believed that the action of the Government indicates the probability that the restoration of penny postage dim" be one of the fcatcres of the next Budget. . „ . . The Post Office is ascertaining what would be the approximate loss of revenue if penny postage were restored, it the enquiries are satisfactory from the Government viewpoint, Cabinet will seriously consider, the inclusion of a restricted penny post in the next Biid<r(q -j|; the national finances permit.— A.P.A.—U.S.
