MINE EXPLOSION.

HOPE ABANDONED. OF RESCUING ENTOMBED MEN. Eress Association- Electric Telesrapli-Copyrigh. (Received Thursday, 8.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, 'Wednesday. A message from Mather states that the authorities have abandoned all hope of rescuing any more of the entombed miners alive. It is finally estimated that the number of dead is 197. The bodies of 161 of these have now been recovered, and thirty-three are still unaccounted for. More bodies, however, are being discovered hourly. Some of these are still limp and warm and indicate that the victims lived for many hours after their entombment. —Australian arid N.Z. Press Assn.
