PORTRAIT OF SHAW.
REJECTED BY ACADEMY. LONDON, Tuesday. The Royal Academy has rejected the Hon. .John Collier’s portrait of Bernard 'Shaw. “It is a great surprise aud a bitter disappointment,” said Mr Collier. “It was totally unexpected. I only submitted two pictures. The other was a portrait of Aklous Huxley, and was accepted!' Mr.'Shaw gave seven sittings. I intend to exhibit the picture elsewhere! Words fail me. The rejection of Mr Shaw’s picture is only my second rejection in fifty years. I have no ’quarrel with the Academy, but I think I have ben harshly treated. I 'cqrisidei the picture better than that of I 'Aldous Huxley, .which was aeqepted. ,Jn fact,-it .is my .best. ~I ; gave Shaw his quizzical, humqrqus .yexpres'Sion.” ■ • ;[ir .i:-; i it Pi Mr Shaw, in an : interview, isaidb' “ I am surprised, like everyone. There is nothing wrong with the portrait, or with Mr 'Collier, or me. It is for the Academy to explain the discrimination, which must be against the .sitter. If it thinks the public utterly tired of portraits of me, then I agiee, and am delighted to yield my . place to Mr Huxley, a young- and less shop-soiled literary colleague.”
