BUSH DISTRICT NURSING.
ENGLISH SCHEME OUTLINED
With a view to assisting the Masterton District Women's Division ot t.ie Farmers' Union with their prelnnniari arrangements for the establishment ot ], u sh district nursing scheme, Mrs StanlcV Fletcher yesterday addressed the members of the Hastorton branc.i on a scheme of district nursing "hu.i v..-m practised with much success, m England. Airs Fletcher, after training ;n cue of the London hospitals, was superintendent in Hampshire of the district scheme, and afterwards hea th loiterer for one of the counties. Her ( Pities entailed considerable travelling, during which she gained much kmr.v](dge of country conditions. Mrs Fletcher stated that the scheme had been founded by Queen Victoria from the residue of £71,1M) subscribed in .shilling donations by the women of Great Britain to th c A ietoria Jubilee fund. The desire immediately arose to develop the scheme in the country, so eountrv associations were formed. These bodies selected women for training and paid the fees, the condition being that the trainees should work for the association for at least two years after completion of their training. Local committees were also formed to assist the parent association in maintaining the scheme. Airs Fletcher thought it was not advisable to engage highly trained specialists for country work, suggesting that motherly women were preferable, ns they were more likely to adapt'themselves to Laekblock conditions. Mrs Fletcher also gave the meeting some of her experiences while engaged in London slum work, which were greatly appreciated. The meeting accorded Airs Fletcher its hearty thanks for her informative address.
