AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

SUB-CENTRE CHAMPION SHIPS

The first annual Wairnrapu Sub-Cen-tre championships were held at Carterton last night, under the control of the ('athertaii Athletic Club oflichds, assisted by members of the Sub-Centre. The weather was mod unfavourable, a drizzling rain falling intermittently, while a stiff wind severely hampered the competitors in most events. The rain also affected the attendance, and those promoting the fixture , :I]l consider themselves fortunate that th,> gross proceeds, amounting to 1— >, were just sufficient to cover expenses. The disappointing feature of the meeting was the poor support forthcoming from Mastertou runners and cyclists.

The entries were not large, but good competition was provided r.i many oi: the events.

Among the competitors was a substantial team from Martinboruiigh, who, through their being no club in that district, ran in the interests of the Mastertou Club. R. A. Rose was a competitor in th e half-mile, the mile and the three miles. In the latter two events he sportingly declined to compete for championship honours, and, so as to make a race of it from the spectators’ point of view, he voluntarily started from marks well behind scratch.

The most notable performance was that of It. A. McKenzie, who won four titles. The detailed results are: —
