BROUGHT BEFORE COURT. DRIVING "LICENSES CANCELLED. (By Telegraph—Press Association ) DUNEDIN,. Monday. Oswald Leonard Edie, of Birchwool, Southland, was charged in the Dunedin City Police Court, before Air Bundle, SAL, yesterday, with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car on January 22nd. The Magistrate said he was satisfied after consideration of the evidence and the actions of the accused that he was under the influence of liquor and not fit to drive a ear. Accused was not drunk.in the usual s'ense of the term, but he was not in a normal state. He would be fined £3 and expenses 21s, and prohibited from driving until March 31st next. STRATFORD, Monday. At the Stratford Magistrate’s Court yesterday, John Luke Flintoff, farmer, of Inglewood, was charged with being drunk while in charge of a car, and ■with a breach of a prohibition order. Defendant admitted having two “spots” in El;ham. On his way home ■he crashed into the back of a car standing off the road at Midhirst:, and collided with another at Tariki. The evidence showed that he wished to fight the owner of the first ear. His wife proceeded home in another car after the first incident, refusing to travel with him. His 1 license was immediately cancelled, and lie was disqualified for driving for twelve months. No fine was imposed. “THE ONLY WAY.” MAGISTRATE’S COMMENTS. STRATFORD, Monday. At the Magistrate’s Court, Air Tate, S.AL. dealt with a lengthy list of speeding and breaches of the motor by-laws, including several cases of crossing railway intersections whilst a train was 1 approaching. He said that the more he heard of these cases the more it confirmed his opinion that the majority of the defendants were altogether unfitted to drive motor vehicles. The only method of protecting the public was by the cancellation of licenses.
