A cable from Tokio states that there are more encouraging reports from the Palace respecting .the Emperor’s condition, but the tension has not relaxed. A quiet wedding took place in the Lansdowne -Presbyterian manse yesterday, when Mr J. W. Carswell, of Bide- . ford, and Miss Janet Ritchie, of Hamilton, were married by the Rev. G. King. A quiet wedding was solemnised at the residence of Mr George Eaton, of Colombo road, on November 24th, by the Rev. G. King. The bridegroom was Mr L. S. Downes, of the railway staff, ' Master!on, and the bride Miss Mabel Baggarloy, of Lansdowne. The happy couple left for a tour of the South Island. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister for Lands, made a brief visit, to Pahiatua A yesterday. The Minister, who motored ® from Dannevirke through Waitahora 'valley, Coonoor, and Makuri, was accompanied by the Under-Secretary for Lands. Mr Thompson, Air E. A. Ransom, M P. for the district, and Mr Milligan, private secretary. The Minister stated that ho was. very pleased with the country, which is looking very well. Air AlcLeod halted here for lunch, and then proceeded to Alasterton, where he made a short stay during the afternoon. A London cable advises that Air J. G. Coates and Sir James Parr inspected Liverpool docks and met many business men interested in New Zealand trade. They were entertained at lunch •by the Alersey Dock Board, and visited .the cotton, corn, and 'provision exchanges, where they urged members to buy Empire’.goods in preference to foreign. After visiting the Cathedral and Town Hall they went to London. Air Coates attended a reception given by the Lord Mayor. Both afterwards ‘ welcomed Prince George on his return from China, and Mr and Mrs Coates dined with the Prince. Air and Mrs Coates are going to France to inspect the New Zealand memorial and the war graves. Membefs of the St. Matthew’s Young Alen's and Young Ladies’ Bible Classes tendered a farewell last evening, in St. Matthew’s Parish Hall, to the Rev. J. H. Datson, who is leaving shortly for Ractihi. Air. H. Guthrie, on behalf of the Bible Class, expressed thanks to Air Datson for the instruction he had so ably and readily given in tho past. Regret was expressed at his , departure, but they were pleased to hear of his promotion. Air Datson had taken a keen interest in the classes and Air Datson 's lessons would be of lasting benelit to the members. Air Guthrie then presented the guest with a eommuuion set. All* Datson returned thanks for their expressions of goodwill and for the gift, which would remind him of the many personal friends made in St. Alatthew’s Bible Classes. An enjoy- < able evening was spent in games and dancing, about fifty couples were present. Misses Ivy Carlo and Ray Rosewarne and Messrs H. Guthrie and J. Bchole'field were responsible for the arrangements of the evening. Air John Stewart Handyside, -whose death, is reported from Napier, was born in Edinburgh in 1344, but came to the Dominion while a boy, settling in Dunedin in 1569. In conjunction with Sir John Roberts and others he commenced farming in Otago, where he worked for a number of years. In 1378 lie, with Sir John Roberts, took up land at Tautane, and Alarainanga, I near Hei-bertville. These properties he converted into prosperous sheep farms, which he conducted suceessfullv for several years. Some twenty years ago the Tautane block was disposed of to Messrs. Herrick Bros., and the Marainanga property was subdivided and sold. Air Handyside then went to live in Napier, where he was held in the highest esteem. Of recent years the late Hr Handyside had taken two trips to the Old Country for health reasons. The late Mr Handyside was married at Homo in 1874, and is survived by his widow and four children, Mr W. Handyside, of Wellington, and Alisses Alay, Daisy, and Jane Handyside. Another son, Air Thomas 'Handyside, saw service in the Great War, and was killed in Palestine in 1917. The many friends of Elizabeth Warren, widow of the late Air Homes Warren, will regret to learn of her death, which occurred yesterday at tho resi.\ deuce of her: son-in-law, Air A. B. Alartin, “Waitawa,” Alartinborough. The late Airs Warren passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was bom in 1362 at Pahiatua, the fourth daughter of the late Air C. R. Bidwill, who arrived in tlie Wairarapa district in 1843. Mrs Warren married Air Holmes Warren, of Tauranganui, a. well-known and highlyrespected resident of the district. Later Air Warren purchased Tauranganui Station. The late Mrs Warren was dearly loved by all whoso privilege it was to know her. She took an active interest in the- work of the Anglican Church and in all matter of benefit to tlie community her help was readily given. Her husband predeceased her in 1919. Two sons and one daughter arc left —Air David Warren and Air Arthur Warren, of Tauranganui, and Airs A. B. Alartin, “Waitawa,” '•Alartinborough. Airs 11. H. Beet ham (Alasterton), and Airs R. H.- Rhodes (Tinian;) are sisters, and Air W. E. Bidwill (“ Rofotowai,” Featherston) is a brother. Genuine sympathy will bo extended to the relatives in their sad loss.
