ROAD RACE.

WON EY GANE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Sunday. The cycling road race from Wellington to Trentham and buck to Wellington, a distance of 42 miles, took place on Saturday. It was an exciting contest, though tiie 'weather was atrocious. The .scratch man, Grose, from C'hristchurnh, and Gane (3min.), and Hayes (6min), showed, splendid form and gradually closed on the long handicap men until, at the concluding stages, it looked as though the scratch man would win. Carswell, the Wellington scratch man, and A. Oakley (Masterton), another scratch man, also rode well, but Oakley had bad luck, sustaining several spills. Grose passed all the competitors and was leading on entering the city. In a gcrat finish Gane made a splendid sprint in the final stage, though Grose made a plucky response. An exciting finish was decided on the Basin Reserve, where, at the finishing post, Gane beat Grose by half a wheel. Hayes (6 mill) was third; Robinson (llmin) fourth, and Toomer (15min) fifth. Honours rested with the visitor, whose performance was loudly acclaimed. The fastest time was put up by F. Grose, his time for the distance being lhr 55min 45 l-10sce, the second fastest timo being secured by Gane (3inin), whose time was lhr 58min 45sec. At the conclusion of the ' meeting a blue riband was presented to the Canterbury champion, Grose, who received another ovation as he stepped forward.
